Spotify Wrapped 2024 Glossary: Top 1%, Listening Characters, and Sound Towns
The biggest social media event of the year is here
We're approaching 'Wrapped Season' and while there's supposedly still time to determine your music streaming habits on Spotify for 2024, your personalized results known as Spotify Wrapped should be coming soon.
The Spotify Wrapped tradition started at the end of 2016 and over the years has grown with 225 million Spotify listeners participating last year. In recent years, listeners have boasted about achieving top 1% status for certain artists or having the most obscure genre preferences (remember Goblincore?).
Spotify also shares global and U.S. top listening trends of the year, making it a good time to reflect on the past 12 months and remember a Brat summer or that viral TikTok song.

When is Spotify Wrapped 2024?
The date for Spotify Wrapped 2024 remains unconfirmed. However, if the release date follows previous patterns it should release on November 29th, Black Friday.
How To Find Your Spotify Wrapped 2024
Once your year in audio is released, it'll be on the Spotify mobile app homepage or on desktop at spotify.com/wrapped. However, your Wrapped is only here for a limited time with in-app access usually dropping off by the end of January.
For those interested in generating memes and fake Spotify results, Kapwing will generate a customizable template for Wrapped 2024 and add it to this article.
Spotify Wrapped 2024 Glossary: Average Minutes
So there's your total time spent listening to music on Spotify and then there's the average of everyone collectively for the year. This can be broken down by age group, gender, location, and other demographics. You can see how your personal stats stack up to the average of people like you.
Total Minutes
This one can go either way: pride or utter horror. Total minutes is a tally of how many 60-second intervals you were streaming music on the app during the Spotify Wrapped period (usually about 11 months of streaming tracking). Data from 2023 shows that the average amount of time on Spotify for Wrapped 2023 for all users was 26,637 minutes. That's almost 18.5 days of nonstop listening.
Listening Characters
New for Spotify Wrapped 2023No. was the introduction of 12 characters to help describe each listener based on individual habits and trends on the app. The same cast might return this year, maybe with new friends joining the fray. A full list includes:
- Vampire
- Alchemist
- Time Traveler
- Cyclops
- Luminary
- Mastermind
- Roboticist
- Shapeshifter
- Collector
- Hunter
- Fanatic
- Hypnotist
Personalities
For 2022, Spotify introduced 16 Music Listening Personalities based on four metrics: Familiarity vs. Exploration, Loyalty vs. Variety, Timelessness vs. Newness, and Commonality vs. Uniqueness. Whatever your mix of listening habits, your Personality was determined as:
- The Adventurer
- The Early Adopter
- The Deep Diver
- The Devotee
- The Replayer
- The Connoisseur
- The Maverick
- The Fan Clubber
- The Top Charter
- The Enthusiast
- The Time Traveler
- The Musicologist
- The Nomad
- The Voyager
- The Jukeboxer
- The Specialist
Top 1%
For any artists that you have on repeat, expect to see them in your top lists. For listeners in the top 1% for a certain artist that means you put in the minutes. Technically you are classified as a Super Listener based on all listeners around the world.
If you're keen on racking up likes and views on social media, sharing your top 1% is a proven crowd-pleaser. Finding Facebook groups or Reddit communities to share your listening habits is also a great form of PR, especially if you are one of the top listeners for a more niche or unrecognized artist.
Top Songs
Soon your 2024 list will share which songs you couldn't get enough of. Your top songs count the number of plays (past the first 30 seconds), not the number of minutes listened to each song.
While you can't see exactly how many plays your No. 1 song racked up on your personal counter, you can see the global listens from around the world. For 2023, Miley Cyrus' "Flowers" was no. 1 in the world with 1.6 billion streams. Look up "Your Top Songs 2023" playlist to see what you played again and again last year.
Top Artists
Similar to top songs, your top artists are the musicians you streamed again and again. Spotify counts the number of tracks played during the Wrapped timeframe and analyzes which artists stack up. Sounds simple, but for your no. 4 and 5 artist, it isn't always obvious who will make the cut. Again this is based on total plays, not minutes listened.
Top Albums
Just looking at your top songs doesn't necessarily mean you know what your top albums are for Wrapped. Spotify looks at how many streams of songs you have across entire albums. If your total streams from across an album's tracks are the highest that'll be your no. 1 — even if your no. 1 song wasn't on that album. Bad Bunny's "Un Verano Sin Ti" was the top album in 2023 across all listeners around the world. But interestingly, none of Bad Bunny's individual songs made it to the global Top 10.
Top Podcasts
Time spent listening to podcasts counts toward your total time streaming on Spotify. But within all those minutes Spotify differentiates between podcasts and music. For podcasts, it's about how much time you spent taking in those shows rather than play counts (not many people are re-listening to podcast episodes). In 2023, The Joe Rogan Experience was the world's top podcast.
Top Genres
Spotify gets creative with its genres — and there are a lot of them, as many as 6,000. While there are the usual like Rock, Afrobeats, and pop categories, Spotify adds some spice to its genre categorization with more specific sub-genres such as Sad Rap, Hyperpop (within electronic music), or Shoegaze (a type of alternative rock).
For your Wrapped look-back, Spotify identifies your top 5 most-listened genres, which might include some more obscure labels. Be prepared for some Googling to better understand your musical proclivities.
Sound Towns
Another 2023 new feature, Sound Towns matched listeners to cities with similar listening data based on frequent songs and artists played. Spotify placed listeners in more than 1,300 places around the world, even if it felt like certain places came up again and again (Burlington, VT was a popular spot on social media). Each "town" has a real top 10 streamed songs of the year list.
